The finest salad topping is homemade croutons! Use the right breads, season them, and make them crispy.
INGREDIENTS
– 4 cups cubed good bread such as sourdough, focaccia, or a baguette (see notes)– 4 tablespoons olive oil– ½ teaspoon fine sea salt– ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper– ½ teaspoon garlic powder– ½ teaspoon onion powderOther optional spices:– Chili powder– Smoked paprika– Cumin– Dried Italian herb– Parmesan cheese
INSTRUCTIONS
Bake at 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the bread in a bowl that is somewhat large.
Step 1
After adding the olive oil and the spices, toss the bread until it is evenly coated with the mixture.
Step 2
Spread the bread out in an equal layer on a baking sheet with a rim. Roast them in the oven for ten to twenty minutes, turning them over once every five minutes.
Step 3
they are golden brown and crisp around the edges, but still slightly tender in the centre. Take note that the croutons will become more crisp as they continue to cool.
