Chocolate Swirl Coffee Cake Recipe

Rich and luscious chocolate swirl coffee cake is constructed with vanilla cake marbled with chocolate. Add a buttery crumb and this is your coffee's new best friend!   


FOR THE CRUMB TOPPING: – 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour – 1/4 cup (50g) packed light brown sugar – 1/4 cup granulated sugar – 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon – 6 tablespoons (85g) unsalted butter, melted FOR THE COFFEE CAKE: – 1 & 1/4 cups (150g) all-purpose flour – 1 teaspoon baking powder – 1/2 teaspoon baking soda – 1/2 teaspoon salt – 2/3 cup (150g) unsalted butter, softened – 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar – 2 large egg – 1 teaspoon vanilla extract – 2/3 cup Greek yogurt – 1/2 cup (85g) dark chocolate, melted

For crumb topping: Mix flour, brown and granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a medium basin.  

Step 1 


Mix with melted butter until crumbs form. While making the cake, set aside (the mixture will crumble).  

Step 2

For cake: Preheat oven to 350°F and butter 9-inch round baking pan. Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.  

Step 3

Beat butter and sugar until frothy using a medium-speed electric mixer. After adding each egg, stir well. Add vanilla and stir well.  

Step 4

Lower mixer speed. Three portions of flour mixture and two portions of yogurt are added. Combine.  

Step 5

Put 1 cup of batter and melted chocolate in a small bowl. Combine well. Evenly distribute the remaining batter in the pan. Make knife swirls in the chocolate batter on top.  

Step 6

Crumble topping over cake. Bake the cake for 40–45 minutes until the top is golden brown and a pick inserted into the center comes out clean.  

Step 7

Slicing the cake requires cooling it entirely in the pan on a wire rack.
